Marriage Proposal Fails That’ll Make You Cringe

Marriage Proposal Fails That’ll Make You Cringe

Culture

We’ve all seen a sappy marriage proposal video or two. People come up with all kinds of creative ways to pop the question. But sometimes, the results aren’t exactly expected … we’re looking at some of the most cringeworthy proposals to be caught on video.

‘Ladies and gentlemen!’

Returning to the spot where you met seems like a good idea if you want your significant other to say “yes” to your marriage proposal. That’s what this man, Justin, was thinking when he asked his girlfriend of three years to marry him. “Right at this spot, right on these steps!” he declares.

After asking for everyone’s attention, Justin announces loud and clear, “Susan, I love you, I want you to be in my life forever!” Everyone is watching them, and Susan is mostly silent. Perhaps she is even bewildered that she is the center of so much attention. Justin’s best friend zooms in as Justin goes down on one knee.

Runaway girlfriend

Justin asks his girlfriend to marry him, and then they go into some sort of whispering conversation. Justin stands up and announces, “She’s a comedian, everyone!” He then turns to her, seemingly reasoning with her, but at this point, we can hear her saying, “Justin! You’re embarrassing me.”

In one final desperate grasp, Justin drops to one knee again, and asks Susan to marry him. At this point, Susan is furious with him, so she turns and runs away like she is being chased. Justin is left on his knee, at the place where they met, wiping away the tears as the crowd laughs and cries with him.

International failure

This next marriage proposal fail comes to us from the land Down “Unda,” in Australia. “We have one person in the crowd,” the game show host says. “I’m gonna call upon right now, to come up here. His name is Peter, and he has something to tell you all!” Peter takes the stage, and asks for his girlfriend, Catherine, to come up.

The host of The Footy Show, which is a sports and variety show, has Peter stand right next to him. Then, Peter tells the host that he was going to ask his girlfriend of three years to marry him. With all the eyes in Australia upon him, he gets on one knee, and says, “Catherine, will you make me the happiest man on Earth and be my wife?”

Proposal fail, Australia-style

Peter spends an agonizing 20 seconds on his knee, listening to the hysterical crowd roar with anticipation. The game show host makes some jokes to lighten the mood, but Catherine just stands there with her hands over her mouth, in apparent disbelief over what is happening.

“I don’t know what to say,” Catherine says.

“Just say yes,” pleads Peter. Then the unthinkable happens. Catherine begins to shake her head incessantly before she runs off the stage in a fit. “That didn’t go well,” says Captain Obvious, I mean the game show host. “I told my mum to record this,” says Peter. Hopefully she didn’t.

Don’t pick food up off the floor, or wedding rings

Cue the violin, and this man is about ready to make the love of his life his forever. You have to give it to this guy, as he managed, somehow, to come up with a bouquet of flowers that looks exactly like the flower pattern on her dress.

Here we are again in a mall, and it seems like the mall is just a good place to go if you want to make a public proposal. However, picking the food court as the site for your proposal might be a bad idea. With flowers in one hand, and a ring in the other, our brave bachelor goes down on one knee to pop the question.

The crazy thing about love

The violin is being strummed, and a crowd of onlookers gather to witness the spectacle. For 30 agonizingly long seconds, this man kneels on one knee and pleads his case to his girlfriend. Eventually, she grabs her purse, and keeps repeating, “You’re crazy … This is crazy … ”

When she finally runs off, the bachelor stands to watch her leave. Her friend leaves with her, in such a hurry that she leaves her purse on the table! But that’s not nearly as bad as the embarrassment felt by the man standing next to the solo violin player, watching his lover run away from his offer.

Proposal at the mall?

“Hi guys! Can we bring it in a little tighter … She’s gonna be here any minute now. I’m gonna propose to my girlfriend!” the young man says. It’s supposed to be one of the happiest days in a person’s life: the moment they finally propose to or get proposed to by their loved one.

“Hype me up, man!” he says as the gathering crowd starts to cheer and clap. After mall security awkwardly shows up and are turned away, the man launches into a speech dedicated to his girlfriend of four years. He can barely hold in his emotions, until he gets down on one knee, and says the words, “Will you marry me?”

Shot down

Upon getting down on one knee, he utters the words, and then waits … and waits … and waits, for an agonizing 15 seconds. The crowd grows restless, with chants of, “Come on now!” But she can’t do it. She can’t say yes, and instead says, “I’m sorry … I can’t.”

It isn’t her who decides to run away, as the man is so devastated that he just tells her to go. He is left on the floor of that mall listening to the laughter of the crowd. Now how could they laugh at him? Then again, how could they not? At least it worked out better for this man than our next marriage proposal fail.

Leap year in Ireland

Yes, you’re seeing this image correctly; that’s a woman down on one knee proposing to her boyfriend! This is Ireland, folks, and in that country, there’s a tradition where every February 29th, women get to do the unthinkable and propose to their boyfriends!

It all starts well for her, and there’s a crowd of friends gathered in the apartment for the occasion. They appear to be cheering, and approve of the whole thing, but then we hear something a little weird: The two of them have only been dating for two weeks! This is not bound to go well, and we can’t imagine what this guy must be thinking.

Maybe they should change the tradition

Well, it doesn’t go well for the Irish lady and her lover. He starts to whisper some things to her (We can take a guess: “We barely know each other!”), and evidently she doesn’t like what he says. Before he knows it, she tosses the ring on the ground and steps on it, and that’s only where the chaos begins.

The Irish lady begins slapping and hitting her boyfriend over and over, and pushes him into the back wall. Everyone in the room jumps into action to pull her off, and just as the video feed is lost, we can hear smashing and crashing around. She probably beat the crap out of him. I wonder if they made it?

Rejection, Korean-style

Traditions around marriage proposals in Korea are far different than they are in the Western world. Men don’t really drop to one knee, and make big, elaborate plans around the proposal. In most cases, they speak directly about arranging a marriage, then a little over half of men propose after the woman has already agreed to marriage.

It’s a little different in this scenario, so this guy must be completely befuddled, as his girlfriend is proposing to him. The two are on a variety show, and the host and crowd are all for this beautiful young lady asking her man to join her in the sacred bond of marriage.

You can take the house and the car!

We don’t speak Korean, so we don’t know exactly what she says, but apparently it isn’t good enough. The conversation becomes contentious, as it becomes visible that the two are arguing. Somehow the car gets involved, and the keys for it serve as a sort of engagement ring.

For reasons we’ll never completely understand, the man becomes furious when she tries to hand him the keys. He takes whatever papers she handed him and throws them at her, then storms off. The host seems to chastise him as he leaves, but given how upset he is, it doesn’t look like he cared two licks about what she said.

‘Mistletoe Cam’

This next marriage proposal fail has become one of the most notorious. It all started when the “Mistletoe Cam” came up during this UCLA basketball game. As the camera panned through the stadium, happy couples (and some awkward ones) began kissing while the stadium cheered.

This man prearranged the “Mistletoe Cam” to come his way, and when it does, his lady immediately grabs his face to kiss him. You would think that that was a good start, but she had no idea that he had no intention of stopping there. He stands up, and all of the sudden an announcer comes over. The woman says, “What’s happening?”

“Sad-Face Cam”

“I knew I was gonna do this from the first day that I met you,” he says into the microphone for the whole stadium to hear. His big grin is only matched by her bewilderment. “Now’s as good as time as any,” he says. Or so he thought …

“Yes is the answer!” someone yells from the audience after he pops the question. His lady appears to consider his offer for a minute, but in the end, she just can’t do it. She shakes her head as she gets up to leave, and the man tries to grab at her. But he is only grabbing air, and the stadium watches him crumble.

The commentator’s curse

Have you ever watched a sports game, and heard the commentator talk about a player, and then something terrible happens to them? Or what about when the commentator foreshadows something awful happening, and then it happens? Well, that’s the commentator’s curse, and in this case, it was all too real.

This gentleman decided to propose at halftime during a Houston Rockets basketball game. “If I had (proposed) that way,” says one of the commentators, “She would’ve probably kneed me haha!” Then the other has the audacity to say, “You know, I’m just waiting for once for the gal to say ‘no.’”

Commentators can be jerks

“You know,” continues one of the commentators, “But she has to say ‘yes’ there, she might say ‘no’ as soon as she walks off the court.” If only she were as polite as the commentators hoped she was. After taking many deep breaths, she leans into the man who proposed to her, and starts to whisper something.

“Well, how do you like that?” says the commentator. As the woman begins to run away, leaving her lover on the floor, the commentator has one last gem: “Well, I was just joking when I said that, you know that, right?” No, Mr. Commentator, we didn’t know that!

What could go wrong?

These two are gathered for this moment in Clearwater Beach, Florida, and this man, Sergio, has pulled out all the stops. Not only did he bring his girlfriend, Sarka, to a picture-perfect spot on a perfect sunny day, but he even paid an airplane to trail the words, “Will you marry me Sarka? Love Sergio.”

Sergio decided not to pop the question in a crowded mall, or in front of a stadium full of people. So did this approach change the result for him? As the plane roars by, and the sun continues to shine down on their love, Sergio drops to one knee, and asks Sarka to marry him.

Clearwater, Florida, but not ‘clear’ enough

Sergio doesn’t have to wait long for Sarka to accept his proposal! You see, folks, perhaps the romantic approach is the best way to go after all. However, just because he went about the proposal the right way doesn’t mean that everything turned out hunky-dory.

His bride-to-be said “yes,” so Sergio relaxes for a moment, and lets the pressure from the situation drain. He then stands up to give his now-fiancée a hug and kiss, and just as he does it, the ring flies out of his hand and into the ocean. It was never seen again. Fortunately, Sarka still married him.

Under the waterfall

This looks like an amazingly romantic place for this man to ask his girlfriend to marry him. The waterfall cascades down the rocky slope and splashes around, creating a soothing sound. There isn’t a soul in sight (other than the person filming), as nature is their audience for the occasion.

Inside Edition via YouTube

As the birds sing and the waterfall swirls, this young man kneels down on one knee, and very sweetly asks his girlfriend to marry him. She doesn’t make him wait long, as she nods her head just as she is overcome with emotion. The man stands up with only one thing left to do: Put the ring on her finger.

Into the waterfall

This man had done everything right up to this point, evidenced by the fact that his girlfriend said yes to his proposal. But did she know her fiancé has butterfingers? Just as he tries to put the ring on her finger, he loses his hold on it. It drops on the rocks and then bounces into the swirling water.

Inside Edition via YouTube

“I was crying with happiness,” she later said of the event. “But then I was also crying with, like, fear all at the same time. I looked up and his face was just shock(ed),” she said as she laughed. Again, the ring was never seen again.

Apple orchard proposal

Again, we have another gentleman who was smart enough not to propose to his girlfriend in front of hundreds of people. But from the way she reacts to his lovely proposal, we’re not too sure that in the private confines of an apple orchard was what she had in mind.

The man here has achieved the element of surprise with flying colors, as his girlfriend was completely oblivious to the fact that her boyfriend was proposing to her! As he gets down on one knee, he asks her to turn around. Then, he pops the question, and something funny happens … nothing.

Apple in the face

It was a long couple seconds for this man here, and her next move was completely unexpected. Thinking he was joking, she winds up, and throws her half-eaten apple in his face. Undeterred, the man doesn’t move a muscle (other than to wipe off the apple juice).

“I was just in shock,” she later said. “Overwhelmed for sure.”

“I don’t think I realized that I had been hit with the apple until afterwards,” he later said. “I think I was so nervous, and … my adrenaline was going. Like, I just thought it was sweat I was wiping off my face.” As she accepts his proposal, she tackles him to the ground with overwhelming joy.

Saying it right, doing it wrong

“I’ve loved you since I first set eyes on you,” the man says, standing tall and speaking loudly for everyone around to hear. “I can’t imagine spending life with anyone else but you.” Aw, that’s adorable, and you’d think this guy was set up for success given what he said. But again, the crowded public area? That’s probably not what she wants.

The man continues to profess his love for his girlfriend, and even takes her hand while he speaks. Then, he drops to one knee and asks her to marry him. The crowd roars with approval, and it looks like our man here is about to have a wonderful day.

Not what he wanted to hear

As this guy is delivering his lovely speech to his girlfriend, we kind of get a notion of what is about to happen, as the girl keeps backing away as he speaks. Then, when he drops to one knee, she moves back ever so slightly, out of reach of his grasp. He does the instinctual thing, and gets up to give her the ring.

She is visibly crying by this point, and even though the crowd is roaring with approval, she can’t muster the energy to say “yes.” Instead, she says something unexpected: “I’m sorry, I can’t right now. I’m seeing someone else!” Looks like our fella here dodged a bullet.

Rap attack proposal

That’s Jorge Calado in the driver’s seat there, and if you’re wondering why he’s on the opposite side of the car, that’s because he’s in Portugal. He’s there with his girlfriend of one year, and baby, whom he apparently had with her not too long before this video was shot.

His girlfriend Sam becomes incensed when Jorge won’t stop playing his loud rap music, even going so far as to shut off the radio on multiple occasions. She can’t figure out why he is rapping, or what the song is about, and the look on her face says it all.

Ohhhh, that’s what you meant

Eventually, Sam figures out that Jorge was singing lyrics that had been written about their relationship. When that happens, she began to warm up to the whole thing. But there’s still no way she could’ve known that Jorge was about to pop the question.

Without missing a beat, the race car driver produces a ring and watches as his girlfriend becomes overcome with emotion. Despite the fact that he chose perhaps the last way she would’ve wanted to be proposed to, she did indeed say “yes.” Shortly after this moment, they stop the car, and even though he didn’t get down on one knee, she happily accepts.

Surf’s up!

This young man had a great idea for how to propose to his girlfriend. This photo was taken in Hawaii, and the surfer couple are catching a wave when he gets down on one knee, and shows his beautiful wahine (a young surfer woman) a ring while asking her to marry him.

TIME via YouTube

Although she says “yes,” as you can imagine in the heavy surf of the ocean, this young man loses his hold on the ring, and it disappears into the ocean. Fortunately, unlike our other unlucky souls, this man had the sense to bring a replacement ring into the water. The real ring is placed on her finger onshore, and the two were happily married some time later.

‘My sweetie pie, my cutie pie’

Why do people feel like a mall is a good place to propose? Our next contestant on the Worst Marriage Fails of All Time would have to be this young man, who basically had everything that could go wrong, go wrong. He set the mood nicely, as he walked her into a crowded crossroads, where he had a band already set up playing romantic music.

The man takes the microphone and launches into a rambling speech like a drunk trying to rap. Then, as if things couldn’t get worse, a train comes passing by and completely interrupts him. He starts his speech over, and as the crowd gathers, he prepares to go down on one knee, but she tries desperately to stop him.

Ukulele to the face

It might’ve been that she didn’t like the crowd that was gathered around them, and that’s why she didn’t respond well to the proposal. It also could’ve been the fact that they had only been dating for three months! But most likely, it was the music playing, because that best explains what happened next.

Before he can even finish the famous four words, she grabs a ukulele from one of the musicians and belts him over the head with it. It had the intended effect, as the man stops talking immediately. It was the spot where they met, and likely, the last time they’ll ever see each other.

Ummm, what are you doing?

This soon to be unhappy couple is at a birthday party, or maybe even a wedding, as the house is packed and the music is bumping. Our wanna-be-groom belts out in song, professing his love for his girlfriend, and let’s face it, that’s not the look you want on your girlfriend’s face when she realizes what you’re doing.

Undeterred, the man is caught up in the moment. He addresses the crowd for over 30-seconds, and by the time he gets down on his knee everyone is behind him. Except for the woman in front of him, who braces for what she knows is coming.

The worst words to include in a proposal

The hopeful boyfriend spends over 90 seconds on his knee, singing, and pleading his case to his girlfriend. However, a word to the wise: If you proposal includes the words, “I can’t go back in time and change anything that I’ve done,” you are unlikely to succeed.

Photo courtesy of Dunkzilla42 via YouTube

Hmmm, so what did he do? Well, her response is, “You can’t fix this,” as she shakes her head and wipes away tears. It appears this man has deployed his last desperate gamble to win his girlfriend over, despite whatever misdeed he partook in (we can guess what it is, and it rhymes with “eating”).

The smiling bachelor

You probably won’t find a happier, more nostalgic bachelor than the one kneeling on one knee in Times Square. Times Square is one of those crowded places that men just figure is a romantic spot to spurn a proposal. We gotta assume that most of them go well, but this isn’t one of those instances.

Photo courtesy of Cabot Phillips via YouTube

A girl is filming the crowded scene, and as she pans left to right we see a man who is all smiles, with his arm around his girl. When the moment is right, he drops to one knee, and everyone around gives a silent gasp of joy, and waits for the girl’s answer.

His face says it all

The man launches into a short speech, and he’s nothing but smiles the whole time. That is until, she says something that wipes away his smile like a shammy on a car window. Someone in the audience yells, “Don’t be afraid,” just as the fright of the moment takes over, and the girl runs off.

Photo courtesy of Cabot Phillips via YouTube

Her exit is sudden, hurtful to the man, and about as graceful as Bambi running on ice. She plows through the crowd, clumsily hitting people as she goes (even knocking one guy’s phone out of his hands). The man’s buddy embraces him and walks him out of there, as the camera girl says, “Did she reject him?” Yes, whoever you are, she did.

The red balloon

This young lad had a pretty good idea for a marriage proposal, but ultimately is ended up in failure. The first thing he did when he met up with his girlfriend in the park was giver her the heart shaped, red balloon as a token of his love.

Photo courtesy of Hossein Hajinejad via YouTube

As the man walks through the park with his love, he stops her and says something sweet to her. As his friend hides behind the trees filming, the man drops to one knee, but the girl doesn’t seem to know what’s about to happen. Then suddenly, he says something (probably, “will you marry me?”), and she finally realizes what’s happening.

Don’t let go!

This man didn’t fail at his marriage proposal because his gal said “no,” rather, he failed because his gal said “yes.” As the shock washes over, she’s overcome by emotion, clasps her hands and reaches out to her lover. This, of course, resulted in her letting go of the balloon.

Photo courtesy of Hossein Hajinejad via YouTube

And what was attached to that balloon? You guessed it, her engagement ring! The man pushes passed her, almost knocking her over, but it’s too late, the balloon is floating away. The last images we have are of the red balloon rising in the sunny skies, flying away, ready to drop into some lucky souls lap miles away.
