Hifumi and Uta Abe, a brother and sister tandem in the sports of Judo, are taking the world by storm. Hifumi has been a force to reckon with since 2016 as he dominantly took judo on the 66kg division. Uta also made her mark as it only took her nine seconds to throw ippon over an opponent.
The brother and sister duo are considered to make strong performance and make it to the top of the coming Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Not only do they make the sports interesting, but they have the most intensely eye-catching talents among their circles.
Given their ability to quickly overpower their opponents, it might be surprising to know that Uta is still a high school student. The rising judo star is only 17 and is still attending school.
Interviewed by CNN Edition, she says that she’s still focused on her studies adding, “I like physical education, I dislike the subjects of English and Maths.” Uta also looks after her brother who is three years older. She says that she uses her brother as an example so she could mold her own judo talents.
In the same interview, she grips her brother in awe saying, “My brother is a role model not just to me but to all of judoka.”
Both the siblings won their respective divisions in the Tokyo Grand Slam held last December. Hifumi said, “Winning the Tokyo Grand Slam with my sister is a great memory. We both share the same goals, and we will continue to support each other.”
In just a few years, the brother and sister tandem has brought in a strong presence in the sports of judo. They’ve had their share of ups and downs too. Hifumi says that his biggest regret was not qualifying for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Uta though, looks forward to Tokyo 2020 as she says, “I feel the spotlight in on me more and more. This motivates me to do more, and perform even better.”
