It’s uncommon for NFL teams to overcome a 20+ point deficit. Unlike basketball, it takes considerable time for football teams to mount a comeback and the odds just aren’t in their favor. That makes gridiron comebacks all the more memorable. Here are epic 10 NFL comebacks that gave viewers chills.
Broncos 27, Raiders 30 (1988)
The L.A. Raiders overcame a 24-point deficit against the home team Broncos in this nail-biter. What’s more, the Raiders scored all of their points during the second half, shocking the Denver home crowd. But as you’ll see, the Broncos have mounted plenty of comebacks in their own right.
Buccaneers 27, Rams 31 (1992)
In this instant classic, the Rams prevailed after being down by 24 points. L.A. stunned the Buccaneers by scoring 28 points in the second half.
Lions 34, Cowboys 30 (2011)
This has to be an embarrassing memory for Cowboys fans. Matthew Stafford led the Lions to 17 consecutive points in the fourth quarter. Just a year later, the Broncos would have a similarly epic comeback.
Broncos 35, Chargers 24 (2012)
Not for the first (or last) time on this list, the Broncos overcame a 24-point deficit. Peyton Manning put on a clinic during the second half and helped lead the Broncos to an improbable win.
Patriots 34, Broncos 31 (2013)
This one came down to the wire. The Patriots came back from being 24 points down. Despite this, the Broncos fired back with a touchdown to tie the game. A field goal put the Pats over, ensuring that their comeback was one for the history books.
Broncos 37, Seahawks 34 (1979)
The Broncos drove across the field for four consecutive touchdowns to help them overcome a 24-point Seahawks lead. The home crowd went wild when running back Rob Lytle ran in for the final score. As chilling as these comebacks have been, they haven’t matched the stakes the next games on this list had.
49ers 39, Giants 38 (2003)
Postseason comebacks like this one are rare. After transcending a 24-point deficit, the 49ers edged out a win over the Giants by one point. But this isn’t the only one-point postseason win.
Cots 45, Chiefs 44 (2014)
Early in the third quarter, the Chiefs were up by 28 and it looked like the game was all but over. Andrew Luck and company had other plans, and the young quarterback helped the Colts to a huge comeback.
Patriots 34, Falcons 28 (2017)
Until 2017, the largest deficit any team had come back from in a Super Bowl was 10 points. The Patriots refused to let the 25-point deficit discourage them, and they came back for one of the most epic Super Bowl finishes to date. But was it as amazing as the next comeback?
